Okay, maybe not huge. But a big deal in our house, nonetheless.
We haven’t started potty training yet. He’s 2.5 and I know that the internets think 2 is the ideal age to potty train, but that’s just not happening yet. Spare me the unsolicited advice.
Anyways. He has big boy undies but we’ve never actually used them. And we have a small potty lid attached to our toilet, so it’s ready whenever he is. On Saturday evening after Jansen’s bath, we started talking about his potty. Stephen asked if it was his potty and asked if he could sit on it. Jansen said no, it was his potty and that he wanted to sit on it. So he did. He sat and sat and sat.
Then he farted.
“I DID IT!!!”
It was the cutest thing ever. He got two M&Ms and big hugs. Normally we won’t reward that, but since it was the first time he’d EVER sat on the potty, we wanted him to see that it was a good thing.
We played for a little while in his big boy undies (on the tile) and then decided to go sit on the potty one more time before bed. He sat down and after about 3 seconds, he started peeing. Jansen and I both freaked out so much that he stopped. He looked at my with the biggest smile on his face (I teared up, no joke) and then he finished.
So many hugs, more M&Ms, and calls to his grandmas happened. It was all SO VERY EXCITING!
For the record, we are still not potty training. I still don’t think he’s ready. He wakes up with massively full diapers in the mornings which makes me think that he doesn’t have enough bladder control. And since I work almost full time, I need him to be really really ready.
Anyways, it was a fun evening here in the house. He did it twice on Sunday too, which just makes me so happy for him. I’m glad he is taking to this on his own.
Sorry for the super “mommyish” post today. I’m sure this is only exciting for about 7 people, but it is something I definitely need documented!
Also, I met my friends’ baby yesterday. He is only 3 days old!! Sadly I still have a nasty cough, so I decided to be a good friend and not hold him. I CAN’T WAIT!!

Yay, Jansen! Henry is not ready to potty train. We have the potty, and training pants and big boy underwear but he just … he’s interested in sitting but rarely in using the potty. He’s more than 2.5, but when he’s ready, he’s ready. Which is not now
Mine got M&Ms when they were successful on the potty, and for a while I was afraid that I was going to have the only children in America who salivated when they had to go to the potty! Congratulations on getting Jansen to realize he can do this! It may be that he can wear the big boy undies around the house during the day, and pull up diapers at night. Night times are a little harder for some kids. I had one of those.
Luke was mostly potty trained by the time he went into the 3s room at daycare. and they were the best with helping him remember to go to the potty. He’s now 4 1/2 and he still wears a pull-up at night. He sometimes gets up in the middle of the night and goes to the bathroom, but he still goes in the pullup every now and then. Basically, I figure that no kid goes to high school still wearing a pullup, so mine won’t either! lol. When Jansen does show a little more interest, a stars-chart is helpful with the whole thing, too. I gave luke a star for 4 things… pulling pants on/off, peeing in the potty, flushing toilet and washing hands. After he got a certain number of stars, he got a dollar store prize (new coloring book, puzzles, etc.)
I didn’t start potty training Mason until he was a month shy of turning 3. In my honest opinion, everyone is different. Do what works best for you and your family. I was telling a friend of mine just yesterday that Potty Training is my least favorite part of parenting. If I could have hired someone to do it, I would have. I’m so thankful I only have one left to potty train and it will be awhile before we embark down that road.
Yea for my big boy!!! Loved loved loved getting “the phone call” Saturday night!
Not giving unsolicited advice… Just an example.
Caden was still waking up with full diapers when we potty trained and actually still had to wear those “Goodnites” until a few months ago. Part of it is that he drinks so much water during the day (we limit it after 6:00), the other was the doctor said it might just take a bit for his bladder to “catch up” with the rest of his body.
PS- Yea for Jansen! Those moments that make you tear up are the BEST,
Yay! Successful potty trips are exciting!
As for ready or not ready, we PT at 2.5 over a long weekend. He was day-time ready. 9 months later he still wakes up with wet diapers! Just in the last few weeks have the not been soaking (peeing on the sheets) wet.
Amelia still can’t make it through the night without a pull up and she’s almost 5. Our pediatrician said that’s fine, that her daughter was 5 (this was 6 months ago) and still in a pull up. When Amelia first started going in the potty (she was 3 and 2 months and it took us an entire weekend of sitting there reading books to her) she still was flooding at night. But do it at yours and Jansen’s speed for sure! It’s the best way. Kids all get how to potty train on their own schedule, just like every other developmental milestone out there.
This is HUGE! I started potty training my boy a bit over 2.5 months b/c he was waking up from naps and even night time with dry diapers. Well that lasted about 3 days. He likes sitting on the potty but getting up every two seconds to look at himself in the mirror. He didn’t enjoy it and started soaking his diapers at nap and bedtime 5 days later so we stopped and will start again when the weather gets better, assuming he seems ready. He is getting the point wherehe tells me he wants his diaper changed so I think we are almost there. Fingers crossed.
My boys were way slower about potty training than my daughter. They’ll let you know when they are ready. Good for Jansen!
