When Vacation is Not Vacation

It annoys me when people are all, “Oh, our two week trip to France was really great… but we sure could use a vacation now. You know how you need like a vacation from your vacation?!”

NO I DON'T KNOW.

I feel so sorry for you and your luxury vacation that made you tired. It must be exhausting being rich and eating a lot of food and walking around a lovely country. You should just take it easy on your couch for a while like us poor folk.

Pshhh.

This weekend we took a vacation to Galveston. It was a long 30 minute drive down there but we managed without any pit stops and Jansen was a real trooper. We were meeting several of our friends from our college community group. Every year we get together at my parents' beach house for a weekend. We've never had the full group there, but we decided early on that we would do it every single year even if not everyone could make it.

It's been fun to see it evolve, each year has added a spouse or a kid.

This year? NOT A VACATION.

Was it fun? Absolutely. Did we enjoy ourselves? Without a doubt. But y'all, there were 4 kids under two in a three bedroom house. Yep.

Each bedroom is

pretty sizable and, aside from the master bedroom, they all have multiple beds. Grown up sleeping arrangements weren't an issue. Add three pack-n-plays and a crib, 4 different bedtimes, 4 different natural wake up times, and 4 different nap schedules. It seemed like there was always a kid asleep and always a parent wishing they were asleep.

Jansen was the oldest. Also the loudest, most hyper, and least likely to share toys. When you're almost 2, it's easy to take the prize on all of those categories. He did well though. He didn't get to sleep in like he usually does (see above), so he was a bit crabby throughout the weekend. We actually think that he may be getting some teeth. He had a couple random unexplained tantrums and he been drooling LIKE WHOA. Aren't there some teeth that are supposed to show up around 2 years? Please say yes.

Anyways, it was wonderful to see our friends. We don't get to see them often since we don't live in the same city as any of them. We had a great time at the beach, cooking, eating, chatting, and watching our kids play.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go sit on my couch.

Sounds like you need a vacation from your vacation.

I am jealous of those peeps who got to hang out with you at the Bella all weekend. Boo! I wanna be there. I want to need a vacation from my vacation with you.

Wait, that didn’t come out right.

Also, why isn’t your blog in my reader anymore?

I loved this post! I can picture it all…mostly because of our own four-kids-in-five-years craziness. But you were in Galveston! I hate to say this but after being on the road for three weeks with said kids…I kinda need a vacation. Sorry.

I am so glad I wasn’t the only one with those feelings. Waking up at 5am on weekend is not a vacation but I truly enjoyed being all together and catching up. Next year, no kiddos.

Aunt Deb said something that I remind myself of while on “vacation” with the boys: “a vacation with kids isn’t a vacation, it’s a change scenery.” She’s a smart lady. :)

    Ditto what Lauren said.

Travelong internationally is rarely relaxing! With all the walking to see a million tourist traps you spent thousands to see, time changes, deciphering foreign languages and map-reading, weird hotel noises… Yeah, when I’ve been home from a city vacation, I usually just want to sleep. That’s precisely why my husband and I didn’t choose to go to Europe for our honeymoon. Might be fun but it’s definitely not relaxing… Kinda like a vacation with kids it seems!

haha yea i’m pretty sure the weekend was more work than a vacation, but Liam loved the beach and we had a great time seeing everyone. i’m already looking forward to next year when the kiddos stay with grandma!
